Code Ocean is delivering a whole new way of making computational science move faster. Their solutions guarantee reproducibility and can reduce compute and DevOps costs by as much as 50%. Code Ocean recently joined the Tetra Partner Network. We’re delighted to share our interview with Simon Adar, Co-founder and CEO, Code Ocean.
Briefly, please tell us about your background.
I’m a researcher turned entrepreneur, with a background in signal and image processing, hyperspectral imaging, and spectroscopy. As part of my Ph.D. at Tel Aviv University, I worked with researchers from the German Space Agency (DLR) and other leading research institutions around the world.
What motivated you to create Code Ocean?
I co-founded Code Ocean in 2015 as part of my postdoc at Cornell University. Having worked in both industry and academia, I experienced the same challenges when it came to building, collaborating, and reusing scientific code. A lot of time was wasted dealing with infrastructure and environment setup, configuration, data management, and other DevOps tasks. I knew there had to be a more productive way to advance science and bring discoveries to market faster.

What are the customer needs or problems that Code Ocean solves?
As I experienced first-hand, researchers are struggling to manage chaos inherent in computational science — including figuring out original datasets and where information should be stored, version control, locating code/data/docker-images/results — all while trying to connect the dots between siloed work. That’s where Code Ocean comes in. We make science move faster by empowering research teams with a platform that is the central hub for research data and computational assets. Code Ocean provides a standards-based environment that organizes the chaos and allows researchers to collaborate more quickly, seamlessly, and effectively by preserving a record of the data and code of every result. The outcome is complete trust in your results: visibility, lineage, and exact reproducibility of every computational experiment.

What makes Code Ocean unique?
Code Ocean is a first-of-its-kind, platform for computational research with:
- Full traceability of results from data entering the platform and its storage location to the end result
- Easy to use automation for best practices in managing research data and applications
- Single pane of glass to manage and track all the assets being used in computational analysis
What kind of success are your customers achieving?
Code Ocean customers have experienced:
- Reduced onboarding time from weeks or months to several hours
- Increased researcher productivity by 15–30%
- Optimized compute and DevOps costs with a 50% reduction
- Guaranteed consistency and reproducibility
- High level of trust in scientific discovery results from C-level management
- High-throughput collaboration in a secure, controlled, and consistent environment — whether working internally or with external research partners
Here are just some of the things our customers are saying:
“It's like night and day. The Code Ocean platform has made us significantly more efficient in onboarding and closing gaps in technology skills. Compute Capsules have cut down on the time it takes new team members to be up and running and allows them to focus from day one on research, rather than on getting set up for their work."
SCOTT NEWMAN, PHD, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF PRECISION ONCOLOGY, SEMA4
“Our multidisciplinary research team of bioinformaticians, computational biologists, data scientists, and machine learning practitioners was up and running after a few hours of onboarding, and able to fully use our existing languages, tools, and frameworks. By adopting Code Ocean as part of our tech stack we have furthered our efforts to have a secure, replicable, user-friendly, and cloud-based computational environment that can be leveraged both internally and with our global network of collaborators.”
PETER CARR, PRINCIPAL PLATFORM ARCHITECT AT LANTERN PHARMA
“Code Ocean opens the door to automating and scaling major aspects of the research process. With the Code Ocean platform, our scientists can focus on their core competencies, do more, think bigger, and achieve higher goals.”
YUVAL KALUGNY, VP ENGINEERING AT CYTOREASON
What is the value of joining the Tetra Partner Network?
TPN is the de-facto network within the scientific data ecosystem. TPN membership means Code Ocean's customers can easily benefit from Tetra data and the innovation potential of collaboration amongst vendors.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Code Ocean recently introduced a Visual Pipeline Builder to the Code Ocean platform. This tool helps to simplify the creation and sharing of complex workflows, with no code required. We’re particularly proud of this addition as it has game-changing potential for research in genetics and other fields by eliminating manual Nextflow scripting with a simple drag-and-drop interface that automates the authoring of complex workflows. It’s another example of how Code Ocean is freeing-up researchers to focus on science, rather than distract from their core discovery goals and waste valuable time.
